Kits Beach Pool

Of Vancouver’s five outdoor public pools, Kitsilano Pool—Kits Pool to locals—is the zenith, the sight to see, the pool. Situated on the water in the heart of Kitsilano, the Kits Pool stretches out in all its glory. At 137 meters (150 yards), it’s Canada’s longest pool—almost three times longer than an Olympic pool—and Vancouver’s only heated salt water pool. With its white bottom and turquoise water and its spectacular views--of the ocean, the mountains, Kits Beach, and the skyline of Vancouver’s West End, glittering across English Bay--Kits Pool is a vacation destination unto itself, and just stepping through the gates feels like an escape. To accommodate every type of pool-goer, the pool is divided into three sections, each running lengthwise: a shallow section for families and small children, a middle section of roped-off lanes for lap-swimmers and exercisers (the lifeguards are tenacious in keeping the lanes clutter--and kid—free), and a deep end for more casual adult and teen bathers.

"Kits Pool looks a little different from when I was a kid in the 1940's and 50's. When I could go 2 laps without touching the bottom I thought I had learned to swim :-)It wasn't heated in those days ( accept by the sun). There was a big diving board to do a cannonball off, and sometimes split your bathing suit. We used to fish off the seawall and suntan, coated in cocoa butter, on the hot asphalt sidewalk above the stage. The big kids played handball at the western end of the pool. We would spend the whole day at Kits. Sometimes if we had 15 cents we would go over to the beach concession and get some chips.Once in awhile we would get fish and chips.Boy were they good! Cost 35 cents I think. At the end of the day if we wanted to save a nickel we would walk home to 34th Ave."
